Interviews will begin with the Delta Kappa Epsilon University of Minnesota Orientation Weekend August 5th and 6th, 2005, and they will continue through September 5th. They will be awarded at a scholarship dinner on Monday, September 12th. Richard E. Flemming Scholarship: Brother Flemming was a member of the Phi Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon who gave his life during the battle of Midway in the Pacific Theatre of the Second World War. Flemming was awarded a Congressional medal of honor posthumously for his actions during the battle. This scholarship is offered to an incoming college freshman who has demonstrated a great respect and loyalty to his fellow man through community service and other philanthropic activities while having maintained good standing grades in either high school or previous semesters in college (at least a 3.0). The winner of this scholarship is awarded $250 in the Fall semester and another $250 in the Spring. Northrop Scholarship: Cyrus Northrop, the University’s second president and the one who served longest, from 1884 to 1911. During the years of his presidency, enrollment increased from 289 to more than 4,800. The legend was that Northrop knew each student by name. At first, Northrop did not wish to preside over the University, but he was heavily recruited by then President of the University William Watts Folwell, who had been an Alpa Delta at Williams College. When his son, Cyrus P Northrop Jr., attended the University of Minnesota he was a founding member of the Phi Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon in 1889. This scholarship is offered to a college freshman that has demonstrated great leadership in past organizations while having maintained good standing grades in either high school or previous semesters in college (at least a 3.2). The winner of this scholarship is awarded $300 in the Fall semester and another $300 in the Spring. Phi Epsilon Book Scholarships The first semester at school is a difficult one, both emotionally and financially. The Book Scholarships are offered to two incoming college freshmen who display the definition of being, “A gentleman, a scholar, and a jolly good fellow,” and who have financial need. They must have each had at least a 2.8 cumulative average in their previous studies, and be committed to maintain their hard work throughout their college career. Each winner of this scholarship is awarded $250 toward the cost of their first semester’s books. Residency Grants: The following grants are offered to help defray the cost of living for the first year at school. John Sargent Pillsbury Grant: A hardware merchant who was owed money by the University for locks and nails in the construction of Old Main, became the school's first major benefactor and its rescuer, and he came to be known as "the father of the University” when he worked to rid the school from its debts through private donations (including Pillsbury's own), land sales, and skillful negotiations with creditors. Pillsbury never attended a University, however due to his dedication to the University of Minnesota and his good character, President Cyrus P. Northrup made him an honorary member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. His statue resides in the ‘knoll area’ of campus as well as a 1908 building named for him. His son, John Sargent Pillsbury Jr., continued the family’s proud Greek heritage by joining Lodge, the campus’ oldest fraternity. These grants are offered to college freshman who exemplifies the definition of a Deke, “A gentleman, a scholar, and a jolly good fellow,” has demonstrated a great respect and loyalty to his fellow man through community service and other philanthropic activities while having maintained good standing grades in either high school or previous semesters in college (at least a 3.0), and plans on moving into the chapter house. One incoming college freshmen is awarded this grant of $600 removed from their first semester house bill. Precedence is given to those who display financial need. George Vincent Grant, like Cyrus Northrop-- a Yale graduate and a Deke, was a teacher and administrator at the University of Chicago for 19 years. Northrop recruited him to be his replacement as president of the University of Minnesota. Vincent's presidency began April 1, and he signed the diplomas of seniors graduating that June, but he insisted that Northrop sign them as well. Vincent made great changes and strides for the University: He recruited gifted scholars and educators, encouraged faculty research, initiated the faculty senate, ended daily chapel, and set up the Extension Division. This grant is offered to a college freshman who exemplifies the definition of a Deke, “A gentleman, a scholar, and a jolly good fellow,” has demonstrated a great respect and loyalty to his fellow man through community service and other philanthropic activities while having maintained good standing grades in either high school or previous semesters in college (at least a 2.8), and plans on moving into the chapter house. The grant will be deducted from his housing bill. One incoming college freshmen is awarded this grant of $600 removed from their first semester house bill.
